The Lizard Squad hacking crew appears to have called it quits over the weekend following high profile assaults on Sony as well as online attacks on Blizzard and Twitch, a broadcast platform for gamers, among others.
The eight-strong group of trickster hackers posted a notice of their intention to throw in the towel on their lizardsquad.com website (and copy on Pastebin here). The notice - Little thieves are hanged, but great ones escape - is full of the sort of braggadocio reminiscent of LulzSec a few years back.
We set out on our journey 2 weeks ago with the plan to cause havoc within the gaming community. Our motives varied throughout this adventure.
Originally it was to see if we could evade being caught and to experience the raw thrill of anarchy, not being bound to phony laws. We've been called everything from an organized criminal 'gang' to complete assholes, really we are just a bunch of guys with too much free time.
Throughout our journey we met new people, gained new members, learned new things. People tried taking swings at us (and missed). We proved that even though we are little in this very big world, that a small group of friends who work together can cause a lot of havoc without legal repercussions. Today we will be disbanding, behind the green reptiles and other bullshit, we have lives believe it or not, things to do, people to meet.
omg the feds
Around the same time on Saturday, the group's official Twitter account was used to claim that two of its members had been cuffed by the Feds. "Looks like the feds have got Komodo and Iguana now. I think I'm next. Good luck FBI," the update stated. This message is contradicted by an addendum to the "we quit" notice of the lizardsquad.com website, which states "The Award For Stupidest News Website Goes To: INCGAMERS.COM For their clear stupidity actually thinking this site was siezed [sic] and believed [sic] that we have been arrested."
Federal authorities have said nothing about arresting anyone over high profile hacks attributed to Lizard Squad, so we're clearly dealing with an unreliable narrator here.
Lizard Squad appear to have been gone quiet for a few days, at least, after courting publicity with an Ask Me Anything on Reddit as recently as last week. This silence and even the group's stated decision to disband might be explained as a response by efforts by a rival activist/gamer, Activist Revolution, to track them down online and dox them.
Lizard Squad rose to prominence with a claimed assault on Sony's PlayStation Network last month that reportedly threw some gamers off the system. Sony initially claimed its network was stable before admitting that it had been hit by a powerful DDoS attack.
