Palm OS II launch date delayed again

Not dead, just sleeping

Palm CEO Ed Colligan has told Brighthand it won't have devices based on its own version of Palm OS until some time in 2008, despite saying two months ago the devices would be available later this year.

Palm has been building its own version of the Palm OS - Palm OS II - since December when it paid $44m for the source code of Palm OS version 5.4, aka Garnet.

That license came from Access, which bought PalmSource and has gone on to develop its Access Linux Platform - featuring the Palm interface on a Linux core, in much the same way Palm intends to use Linux for its Palm OS II.

Whether the latest delay is down to unexpected issues with the Garnet source code isn't known, but seems likely.

Given the death of Palm OS as a development platform, it's hard not to see this announcement as one more nail in a coffin which is already buried six feet under. ®
