Tibco backs Ajax with message bus

Developers challenged to build mega mashup

Tibco Software has increased its open source credentials by handing over the core of its PageBus messaging software to the Open Ajax Alliance. The move follows last October's release of its General Interface Ajax application toolkit as a free open source package.

Tibco says PageBus uses tried-and-tested publish and subscribe message bus technology to support communication among multiple Ajax components. This enables developers to build composite applications from reusable parts and services and helps keep costs and development time down, according to the company. More importantly, it provides a robust and scalable technology as a foundation for the complex 'mashup' applications for enterprise use.

Kevin Hakman, Tibco's director of developer evangelism, says the company is responding to the growing acceptance of open source software in the enterprise market. "When Tibco acquired the General Interface technology back in 2004, people asked why an SOA company wanted to buy an Ajax GUI. But there is a lot of synergy between Ajax and SOA and we have seen a ten-fold increase in the use of this technology in the enterprise market. Enterprises love open software - but they love it even more if it is delivered by enterprise software companies like Tibco."

To kick-start the PageBus technology, Tibco has launched the Ultimate Mashup Ajax Challenge, a developer community project to build the world's largest mashup using PageBus and the General Interface toolkit. The challenge will run until 30th September 2007 when Tibco and event co-sponsor Artima.com will award prizes to the best entries. Further details of the competition are available here. ®
