A small monkey enjoyed a free trip to New York courtesy of a man who smuggled the animal under his hat for a flight from Florida to the Big Apple's LaGuardia airport.
The marmoset monkey did not remain hidden for long, however, with passengers spotting the animal clambering out on to the man's ponytail mid-flight, reports Associated Press.
The man, whose journey (presumably with the monkey) began in Lima, Peru, had been travelling on a Spirit Airlines flight.
He had stopped over at Fort Lauderdale, Florida for several hours before boarding the flight to New York.
A spokeswoman for the airline said that when passengers first set eyes on the fist-sized creature some asked the man "if he knew he had a monkey on him."
But, who knows, perhaps the marmoset was simply catching some zeds.
It is unknown whether the man will face criminal charges for breaching security and breaking quarantine rules.
As for the future of the marmoset, New York animal control heavies stepped in to give it a home at the less-than-desirable sounding Centers for Disease Control and Prevention where it will be held for the next month.
Keep it under your hat, but sources close to the matter are suggesting it could eventually end up at the zoo. ®
