Girlie website's user data blunder

'Now where did we put that? Oh yeah, it's in my Handbag'

Like stripping off chipped old nail varnish and applying a fresh coat, Handbag.com relaunched its website last week.

The site, which covers an array of must-know topics for women (no, really), includes stuff like how to pin down your man and pin up your face.

But, alas, the relaunch didn't quite go to plan with essential user information such as logins and passwords not being transferred over to the new developer team in time. Ooops.

Handbag decided to contact its users and admit it had "slipped up". An email was dished out to lovely ladies across the land, all of whom were told, "We might have lost your logins and passwords!"

But fear not, said exclamation-happy Handbag:

"If you really want to enter any competitions before we have sorted it out, you will need to re-register to be able to enter and fully enjoy the new-look Handbag. It will only take a couple of minutes and we promise we won't lose them ever again!"

El Reg put a call into Handbag to find out when users, who have been login-less for a whole week, can expect service to be resumed.

A spokeswoman told us: "Essentially it was just a timing issue, we launched last Thursday and we just hadn't brought that information over from the one to the other and that's happened today and all of the data has now gone in."

Asked if delicate users could be worried, confused, tearful even, about the security implications of their details being lost in the site's makeover, the spokeswoman told us:

"We've had the most amazing and positive feedback from our readers. They've been sending lovely emails saying, 'Oh dear, you're good strong girls we're sure you'll be able to get it back soon'."

Happy-ever-after, she also confirmed that Handbag users will receive a follow-up email on Monday telling them that all the data has been restored. ®
