Cantec to click with Irish tech fans?

Retailer rebrands as

Irish computer chain Cantec Computerstore is embarking on an ambitious expansion programme, rebranding as and creating 100 jobs over three years.

The independent retailer, which sells home media and IT products, plans to invest €3.5m in opening 14 new stores, creating 100 new jobs in the process. By 2010, the company hopes to employ more than 170 people in 20 stores.

The first of the new stores has already begun trading, with the Gorey, Co Wexford, outlet opening its doors last week. The company, which was founded in 1997, has stores in Navan in Co Meath; Athlone in Co Westmeath; Cavan; Carlow; Maynooth, Co Kildare; and Ashbourne, Co Meath - all of which will get a makeover as part of the rebranding -- and is headquartered in Navan. It is also venturing into online shopping at its website

"We chose '' as our new brand name as it is simple and direct. As a retail brand it mirrors our company's philosophy that technology should be simple, accessible and without barriers. Our customers know that when they walk into one of our stores, they can get all the information they need about our products in a straightforward manner without any over-complicated jargon," said managing director Maurice Muldoon.

The firm hit the IT headlines as Cantec Computerstore last year when it linked up with Bray-based computer security software company Stealth Shield to offer ComputracePlus tracing software in its stores. It also sells everything from computers, laptops, printers and scanners to digital cameras, MP3 players, software and games.

The move will put the new chain in competition with larger retail names such as PC World and Harvey Norman, who have already made inroads into the Irish market. However, says it is relying on its customer service and accessible stores to make the expansion a success.

"Each store is situated in a highly prominent retail location within towns or in local shopping centres. We offer people a friendly and convenient alternative to travelling to the large 'out of town' stores," said Muldoon.

"As we will continue to offer the best brands, the latest technology and the most relevant products for home and professional users. And while our name has changed, our expert staff will continue to make buying technology simple and accessible for our customers."
