Sony denies $299 PS3 talk

Keep filling your piggy-bank

If you’re hoping to bag a cut-price PS3 then Sony has some bad news in store. Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) has stated that rumours of a $299 (£150/€210) PS3 are nothing more than wishful thinking.

Speculation about a newly priced PS3 appear to have stemmed from Slickdeals.net, where one user’s thread claims that a $299 version of the console will be launched on 28 January.

However, SCEA’s since confirmed to gaming website Gamepro that it has “no plans for any pricing announcements on PS3", instead verifying that any news of a price change is "purely rumour and speculation”.

The news will be a double disappointment for penny-pinching gamers. Earlier this week, Sony denied that a white PS3 rollout was in the works for Europe and the US, despite it lodging documents with the US Federal Communications Commission for a Ceramic White PS3.
