Telehouse plans £80m London data centre expansion

Bigging it up

Telehouse Europe is to invest £80m ($162m) in a facility that will almost double the size of its London Docklands data centre.

The development will see the construction of a new eight-storey, 12,000m2 data centre, dubbed Telehouse South, adjacent to its two existing data centres in Docklands.

Construction will begin later this year and the new facility is scheduled to come on-stream around the start of 2010. Telehouse will market the hosting facility to City-based financial institutions, online and media businesses, global enterprises, and organisations involved in the London 2012 Olympics.

Project managers working on Telehouse South hope to deploy the latest communications, monitoring, and resilient power and cooling technologies, as well as adopt the latest environmental standards and best practices.

Telehouse's facility in London Docklands has become the biggest internet communications hub in Europe, with over 700 customers including telecoms carriers, ISPs, media companies, and corporate customers.

Telehouse is also home to the London Internet Exchange (LINX), one of the world's largest Internet Exchange Points. Demand for more secure hosting facilities is beginning to outstrip supply, according to the firm.

Tokuji Mitsui, managing director of Telehouse Europe, said: "Business requirements for outsourced and highly secure, resilient data centres, coupled with the massive growth in business and consumer internet services, has led to demand significantly outstripping supply in London – one of the world's key financial and media centres."

In parallel with the London expansion, Telehouse will invest in an additional 15,000m2 of new facilities near Paris and open its first data centre in Singapore, with a 1,500m2 building. Telehouse recently opened a data centre in Beijing and already operates in New York, Los Angeles and Hong Kong.

In the longer term, additional expansion across nine countries in South East Asia, Eastern Europe, and emerging markets is also planned. By 2010 Telehouse aims to be running data centre facilities occupying a total of 100,000m2. ®
