Blu-ray-for-Xbox 360 rumours restoked
Redmond keeping mum
The Xbox 360 rumour mill is churning again thanks to fresh claims that the Microsoft has placed orders for consoles with Blu-ray Disc drives, allegedly in partnership with a subsidiary of PC manufacturer Asus.
According to a report on Taiwanese Chinese-language newssite UDN, Pegatron Technology will assemble Xbox 360s equipped with internal Blu-ray drives. It’s claimed the first such models will roll off of the production line within six months, although where they’ll go on sale first is anyone’s guess at this stage.
Microsoft has never really confirmed or denied that it’s working on a Blu-ray Xbox 360. But the company has definitely denied that it’s “in Blu-ray talks” with PlayStation 3 maker Sony.
Earlier this month, Microsoft also denied that it was working with Taiwanese optical drive manufacturer Lite-on to develop a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360.
Microsoft wasn’t available for comment as Register Hardware went to press, but a denial that it’s working with Pegatron over Blu-ray probably isn’t far away.
