Rude Tintin pulls out

Saucy Spanish comic besmirches Snowy image

A salacious Spanish reinterpretation of a Tintin story has been yanked from bookshops as a yucky stain on the comic book character.

Antonio Altarriba published The Pink Lotus last year, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the birth of Tintin creator Hergé, the Guardian tells us. But the story - a new version of classic Tintin yarn The Blue Lotus - offended the estate of the Belgian writer, whose real name was Georges Remi. The offence appears to have been caused by the graphic sexual content of the book, in which a grizzled thirty-something Tintin debauches himself far and yon with a bushel of assorted line-drawn hussies.

Tintin himself is never seen doing the nasty, but there is at least one depiction of full-on filth between a man and a woman. Probably best to ban it to be on the safe side of the extreme porn laws, then. The publishers, Edicions de Ponent, were leant on by the estate of Hergé until an agreement was reached that the book would be pulled from shops in perpetuity, and never seen again except on eBay, obviously.

Author Altarriba is understandably put out. "I have used many characters from the past in my books and I have never had a problem," he said, "but after this I will never write again about Tintin." Instead, we imagine that he may turn his priapic pen to the adventures of Asterix, although we shudder to think what might become of any nubile Gaullette who tangles with Obelix.

We eagerly await the non-sexy and racism-free Tintin trilogy from Messrs Jackson and Spielberg. ®
