Sony's curved OLED

CEATEC visitors treated to prototype display demo

Sony has gotten all bent out of shape over OLED screens and given gadget fans a sneak preview of its curved organic LED display.

The 0.3mm-thick screen’s on show at the CEATEC show in Japan. Unfortunately, nothing’s known about the screen’s technical specifications yet, other than those that can be gained from the pictures.

However, it does provide a fantastic insight into the future of OLED and its potential to displace the all-mighty LCD in years to come.

The ability to bend an OLED could see such screens used in all manner of environments where physical screens haven’t been able to step before - wrapped around pillars like paper posters, for example. Bending the display is also likely to increase the screen’s viewing angle.

It’s worth noting that Sony isn’t the first manufacturer to display a curved OLED. In October 2007, Samsung took the wraps off a curved OLED screen that measured around 4in and had a 480 x 272 resolution.
