Next-gen Atom set back to Q4
Timed to fuel Xmas netbook binge?
Intel's next-gen netbook-centric mobile Atom, codenamed 'Pineview', won't appear until mid-way through Q4, the chip giant's latest roadmap reveals.
So far, it was believed that the part would debut mid-2009, probably early in Q3, but Pineview appears to have slipped a quarter and a half, if a roadmap posted by Japanese-language site PCWatch is to be believed.
Usually, it can be, and the rumours spreading about Pineview's speeds and feeds suggest it'll be worth waiting for - certainly more so than the stop-gap 'Diamondville' Atom, the new 1.67GHz N280, which will be appearing in netbooks very shortly.
Pineview is expected to contain its own memory controller and graphics core. The latter's said to be a 200MHz version of the 133MHz GMA 950 core that's currently found in Atom-based netbooks.
Other features will come from the other - as yet unknown- chips that make up Intel's 'Pine Trail' mobile platform. ®
