Girl develops 'PlayStation palmar hidradenitis'

And just after surviving a nasty bout of Wii Tennis elbow, too

Do you have red, sore lumps on the palms of your hands and soles of your feet? If the answer’s yes, then you could be suffering from… ahem … PlayStation palmar hidradenitis.

Doctors in Switzerland recently diagnosed a 12-year-old girl to be suffering from the deadly-sounding disorder after her parents admitted that she often plays her PlayStation for “several hours a day”.

Apparently, the symptoms are usually seen on more active children, such as those taking part in vigorous physical sports. It’s not clear if the condition only affects kids. The girl was forced to take a ten-day gaming break before the symptoms disappeared.

Doctors assume that tight and continuous grasping of a controller, together with repeated button pushing, may cause PlayStation palmar hidradenitis. Medicos have also warned that sweating during gameplay – particularly if you’re just about to complete Gears of War 2 - may make the problem worse. ®
