Vuzix redesigns pop-up books

3D animated characters, but no tea parties on the ceiling

Vuzix has updated its VR920 virtual reality goggles with an add-on supposedly capable of bringing books alive with pop-out 3D characters.

The Augmented Reality (AR) Accessory Kit is currently being shown off at the on-going Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, where it's used in conjunction with a specially created animated book to create computer-generated 3D characters.

The kit consists of a USB camera that clips onto the VR920 goggles, allowing both objects and the wearer’s position in 3D space to be accurately tracked. Also included is a wireless AR input controller that lets the wearer interact with virtual, mixed and AR worlds with “revolutionary six degrees of freedom tracking”.

Combination of the kit’s two add-ons will “open up new applications in the gaming, education and business sectors”, Vuzix promised.
