T-Mobile and Android to renew vows?

Rumours of T-Mobile Android-based mobile... and tablet PC

T-Mobile looks to have fallen head-over-heels for Google’s Android platform, with rumours emerging that the network giant has decided to use the OS on devices other than mobile phones.

Handset maker Huawei told website Mobile Today that it plans to launch its Google phone on T-mobile “this year”. HTC’s Magic is the second Google phone, but won’t be available in the UK until May, through exclusive carrier Vodafone.

The Huawei Android is expected to arrive some time in Q3. Huawei said the phone will sport a 5Mp camera, Wi-Fi and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Provided T-Mobile doesn’t launch another Android handset in the interim, such as a Samsung Android, then Huawei’s Android will probably be the carrier’s second Android phone after the HTC-developed G1.

It’s also been revealed – thanks to confidential documents from a T-Mobile partner and seen by the New York Times – that the carrier’s inked plans to push Android into the home communications space.

In early 2010, the firm will start selling a home phone, followed by a tablet PC later in the year. Both will run on Google’s Android OS.

It’s said that the home phone will connect into a docking station and ship with another device to handle data synchronisation as the phone’s battery is recharged.

The tablet device will resemble a small laptop without a keyboard, have a 7in touchscreen and handle basic computing tasks, including weather monitoring or data access across several in-home devices - similar to Orange's Tabbee and O2's Joggler, in other words.

T-Mobile hasn’t confirmed if the leaked documents are accurate, but has reportedly admitted that it’s planning to launch several Android-based devices. ®
