Dell dives as Western Europe PC market stagnates

Only netbooks can save us now

PC sales in the UK went into reverse in the first quarter with surging netbook shipments as the bottom fell out of the professional market.

Latest figures from Gartner show the UK's decline came amidst marginal growth in the Western European PC market, with total shipments growing 0.7 per cent year on year to 15.3 million units. HP maintained its top slot across the region, with market share of 22.8 per cent, despite its shipments growing just 1.2 per cent.

Acer grew shipments 31.6 per cent to grab 22.1 per cent of the market, while Dell's shipments plummeted 22.1 per cent, leaving it with 10.6 per cent of the market. Toshiba grew its shipments 20.3 per cent to take 6.8 per cent overall, while ASUS grew a whopping 43.4 per cent to 4.8 per cent.

ASUS's growth alone shows what is keeping the market going through the recession - customers clambering over each other to get hold of small, cheap netbooks. Dell, with its focus on the corporate market went the same way as its big corporate customers - down.

In the UK, total shipments were 3 million, down 5.1 per cent. HP continued to rule the roost, taking 22.2 per cent share, despite seeing its shipments decline 6.8 per cent. Dell's shipments slumped 21.7 per cent, leaving it with 20.3 per cent of the market.

Acer saw shipments surge 40.6 per cent, giving it 16.8 per cent of the market. Toshiba took 9.1 per cent of the market, after growing shipments 7.7 per cent, while Apple took 4.8 per cent of the market, growing shipments 6.6 per cent.

France saw total shipments grow 3.2 per cent to 2.5 million, with Acer taking top slot, with 26.5 per cent of the market, after growing shipments 18.3 per cent. German PC shipments were three million units, up 4.5 per cent. Once again, Acer took the number one slot, growing units 71.3 per cent to take 18.5 per cent of the market. ®
