Garmin wrestles with failing satnavs

Fix posted, but problems persist for some

Garmin has landed itself in a sticky situation following a spate of complaints claiming the the firm's satnavs are faulty.

Over the past few days, rather a lot of Garmin Nüvi 7x5 satnav owners have written in online forums that their devices suddenly started having difficulties finding satellites or updating their firmware. The issue is thought to have been caused by an on-going software glitch.

Garmin this week issued a firmware update it claims will correct all such problems. The patch is available online.

But the update, Garmin admitted, currently only works for its Nüvi 7x5, 800, 8x5, Zumo 660, GPSMAP 620 and GPSMAP 640 models. Firmware updates for other affected devices will be available online “in the near future”, the company pledged.

Some bloggers had also claimed that their Garmin satnavs turned themselves off and, the firm’s admitted, it's necessary for this group of users to go online to “to request a return authorization so that the device may be repaired under warranty”. ®
