Gmail turns into label junkie

What folder are you wearing this season?

Google has rejigged the labelling toolkit in Gmail to make it more accessible and interactive for users.

It’s shifted labels to a more prominent location on the Gmail homepage. Mountain View has also provided a drag and drop function for emails to be added directly into labels.

As a result, the company said it had ditched Right-side Labels, which was an experimental Gmail Labs feature.

“This is the first Labs feature we’re retiring… Now that labels aren’t in their own little box and take up much less space, moving them around the screen didn't seem as important,” wrote Google in a blog post.

Labels now rest above the chat list in Gmail and have been stapled onto the end of the inbox, drafts, spam et al, folders. Additionally users can now hide/show their labels, noted Google.

Our conclusion? Gmail is competing to be the world’s best online Outlook looky-likey. Natch. ®
