EnterpriseDB offers 'way out' from Oracle price hikes

Gentle application of pressure

EnterpriseDB has announced a migration assessment program for database customers who want a "way out" from Oracle price hikes.

The program features what the open-source database company called a "detailed benefit analysis" and a methodology for migrating to its Postgres Advanced Server.

EnterpriseDB announced its assessment after Oracle bumped up the prices for some important components in its database management suite by more than 40 per cent. The prices are detailed in the July 2009 edition of Oracle's price list.

Ed Boyajian, president and chief executive of EnterpriseDB, said in a statement: "The EnterpriseDB Oracle Migration Program provides a way out for companies that have had enough of these hikes. In a matter of weeks, we can successfully migrate companies to the proven PostgreSQL database so they can start to free themselves of the pricing whims of Oracle once and for all."

In its latest increase, Oracle pushed up the prices for its diagnostics, tuning and configuration management packs for its database. The packs provide performance and availability reporting, analysis and tuning, and compliance enforcement on huge systems for customers in some critical markets.

Compliance is something those banking and health care cannot do without, while Oracle pitches its Diagnostics Pack in conjunction with Oracle's Enterprise Manager Grid Control to simplify management of large sets of databases.

Oracle updates its price list every summer, and in June 2008 it took flack for jacking up the price on its core database by up to 20 per cent and the newly acquired WebLogic by an "eye opening" 47 per cent. These prices are unchanged this year. ®
