BMW offers e-Mini tryouts to UK drivers

No such thing as a free lunch

Leccy Tech Fancy an electric Mini for six months? Well, now's your chance because BMW is taking applications to be one of the 20 lucky folk who will make up Round One of its UK leccy Mini field trials.

Applicants must reside within the rough triangle formed by Andover, Oxford and West London and must have a private garage, car port or parking space at their home. This is so that Southern Electric can drop by and install a 240V, 32A charging box and 6.5m charge cable.

BMW's e-Mini: this car could be yours... for a small monthly consideration

Successful applicants will be charged £330 ($536/€375) per month for the privilege of telling BMW if its electric cars work or not, but that price does include VAT, insurance and maintenance.

The lease fee was originally set at £550, but BMW has trousered a chunk of the £25m ($40m/€28m) government-funded e-car trial subsidy allowing it to drop the price.

For your money you will getting a car that, on the upside, has 204bhp on tap but, on the downside, has no rear seats because that's where the battery pack sits.

The application process will be open until 30 September but a second round for a further 20 leases will take place next year.

BMW has announced that two new Mini models, the Coupé and the Roadster, are to be built at the Mini factory in Cowley, Oxfordshire. It's expected the plan will create another 1000 jobs. Both models will be officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this month to celebrate the Mini's 50th anniversary.
