Sony says ‘No’ to UMD swap shops

Cans plans for UMD-to-PSP Go! game transfers

Sony has confirmed that owners of old-school PlayStation Portable (PSP) units won’t be able to transfer UMD-based games onto the digital-only PSP Go!

The PSP Go! doesn’t feature a UMD bay, but Sony had previously said it was considering ways of allowing UMD games to be transferred onto the PSP Go!

Details of how Sony hoped to achieve this never emerged. But one method rumoured to be under consideration by the Japanese electronics giant was throught to involve creation of in-store kiosks where gamers could swap a UMD-based game for a digital version of the same title.

However, Sony Computer Entertainment of America has since said: “Due to legal and technical reasons we will not be offering the program at this time” – according to a report by website Kotaku.

PSP Go! buyers will, instead, be forced to buy all their games through the console’s web connection and install them onto its integrated memory or removable memory card.

Sony’s PSP Go! will be available to buy in the UK from 2 October, priced at £250 ($400/€272). ®
