Nintendo chief downplays further Wii price cuts

Won't happen, claims exec

A Nintendo executive has hinted that another Wii price cut isn’t on the cards because the console already represents good value for money.

When asked if Nintendo will have to cut prices in order to draw more people to the console, Reggie Fils-Aime, head of Nintendo US, said: “Absolutely not.” His comment came during an interview with CNBC.

The Wii’s price was reduced – both in Blighty and North America – earlier this month, leading Fils-Aime to claim that the console’s new lower price point provides gamers with “a lot more value”.

However, UK gamers have responded to Nintendo’s recent Wii price cut – which saw the trade price reduced by £20 to £180 ($295/€200) – with mixed feelings. Back in March, the firm upped the console’s trade price from around £180 to £199 – meaning the latest cut essentially set the Wii’s price back to where it was at the start of the year.
