Vodafone drops top-of-the-range HTC

What with the iPhone coming and all...

Vodafone has stopped selling HTC's flagship, the HD2, citing problems with reliability and stock. Plus the forthcoming iPhone makes the HD2 redundant.

The HD2 is a Windows Phone, with an enormous screen and price to match, but has been well reviewed and was selling well. At the start of December Vodafone said it was selling so well the stock had all gone, before finally admitting yesterday that it wasn't planning to get any more stock in.

The operator's statement just says that there are lots of other smartphones available, including the iPhone which will be available on Vodafone next year, and that "we're confident that we continue to offer the broadest range of devices to our customers".

But that was true a month ago when Vodafone started selling the HD2, so what's changed since then? Well... Vodafone has launched its 360 handsets which are made by Samsung. It is certainly in Samsung's interests to see HTC's flagship handset off the shelves - but it's hard to imagine Vodafone would go that far just to please its partner.

Callers to Vodafone's support line have been told that there were problems getting stock, and problems with the handset reliability, though the official line remains that the operator just doesn't feel like selling it any more.

We asked about the future of other HTC handsets and were told: "The ones already in the range? We'll continue selling those", but the company wouldn't be drawn any further.

We tried to contact HTC but they're all off at their Christmas party so couldn't comment - we hope they're having a good time, 'cos it might be the last decent bash HTC has for a while. ®
