AMD adds Black Edition to Phenom range

Mysterious, sinister variant in five strong chip update

AMD fleshed out its Phenom II and Athlon II ranges with a quintet of fresh processors today, three of which barely trouble the $100 price barrier.

The AMD Athlon II X2 255 is a 3.1GHz, 65W part which will cost $74 in industrial quantities, while the AMD Athlon II X3 440 is a 3Gz 90W part, setting you back $84. The AMD Athlon II X4 635 hits 2.9GHz and 95W, and will cost $119.

There are two new members in the Phenom family. The 3.2GHz/80W AMD Phenom II X2 555 comes in at $99, while the AMD Phenom II X4 910e clocks in at 2.6GHz, runs at 65W and costs $169.

For some reason, AMD is describing the Phenom II X2 555 as the Black Edition, which presumably is supposed to make it sound mysterious and even slightly threatening. So it's slightly disappointing when you realise AMD is pitching it at the budget-conscious Windows 7 market. ®
