'Racist' job ad sparks investigation

'Indian preferred'

An advert for an IT professional "preferably of Indian origin" is being investigated after complaints were made to the Equalities and Human Rights Commission.

The ad, placed on jobsite.co.uk, said: "Minimum six years of experience in IT ... The person should be a UK citizen with security clearance from the UK Government. Preferably of Indian origin." Jobsite told the Daily Mail it did not check ads before they were listed and the wording was the responsibility of the advertiser.

Tory MP for Monmouth, David Davies, said the ad was clearly racist and he called on the ECHR to investigate.

The ad was for a job at IT consultants Torry Harris which has offices in Bristol, New Jersey and Germany as well as offshore centres in China and India.

A spokeswoman for Torry Harris sent us the following: "We have employees whose ethnic origins are varied and diverse. We will not tolerate any form of discrimination, racial or otherwise, whether it is of a positive or a negative nature.

"This matter is presently the subject of a thorough internal investigation.  If any employee or employees are found to have acted improperly in any way, shape or form, we will instigate disciplinary proceedings without hesitation." ®
