YouTube does a Lindsay and takes a tumble
Both face down in a cactus
YouTube was having a little lie-down this morning, as its home page served up an error message to fans of cute kittens and falling-down Hollywood types everywhere.
Anyone trying to reach the front page got a bald message - "Http/1.1 Service Unavailable" to be precise - prompting some to speculate whether the site had been hacked.
Most of the rest of Web 2.0 world went into immediate panic mode over Twitter.
A YouTube spokesman confirmed the outage without throwing much light on what was happening, saying: "We apologize for the inconvenience, but YouTube is temporarily unavailable. Our engineers are currently working to restore the site."
However, the truly faithful quickly realised that by going in via a specific video they could still enjoy the sight of, for example, Lindsay Lohan falling into a cactus at 3 in the morning, suggesting it's the front page in particular that is feeling a little tired and emotional. Kind of like Lindsay.
Microsoft Twittered that you could do this via Bing - but didn't mention it was equally achievable through Google. Both of which are unsurprising. ®

Thanks to all the readers who got in touch to let us know YouTube was incapacitated.
And yes, it bounced back up over lunchtime. Which we're guessing Lindsay will too.
