Nips slip past Apple censors

But is it art?

iPhone fans with a penchant for naked breasts and an inability to surf the web can now play puzzles containing risqué images - in apparent violation of Apple's 'no naughty bits' policy.

But these ones are allowed 'cos they're art. The new applications consist of sliding puzzles showing nudes taken from classical paintings, which obviously don't offend in the way that modern nipples do.

Americans get a selection of bathing beauties, while iPhone users in the UK will have to satisfy themselves with one application featuring nudes by Modigliani - not our own cup of tea, but it takes all sorts.

The apps were noted by Mobile Entertainment, and have the advantage that one can claim to be researching great art when caught looking at them.

Apple started pulling off porn apps last month, having taken a liberal view in November and allowed naked guys and gals in iPhone applications.

The purge saw naked flesh stripped from iTunes, unless it was promoted by a big brand that Cupertino didn't want to offend. That left porn to the kind of Web Apps that Steve Jobs originally suggested was all the iPhone would ever need.

That might seem to leave the little player out of the iPhone-porn market, but Polish developer Pawel Bragoszewski has proven that this is not so.

Quite where art becomes porn is a long running debate, and one that we're not going to get into here, but we look forward to finding out exactly where Cupertino draws the line as hordes of "artistic" applications head for the breach. ®
