BT fibre upgrades hit full speed
303 more exchanges
BT's fibre optic upgrade programme is picking up pace, with a further 300 exchanges earmarked to offer faster broadband today.
Covering about four million lines, the latest tranche of exchanges will be upgraded between Autumn this year and Summer 2011. It represents a significant portion of the overall programme, which is scheduled to cover 10 million lines - about 40 per cent of the network - by mid-2012.
This time 192 out of 303 exchanges are in London and the South East, continuing BT's focus on densely populated areas where the return on its investment will be highest.
Overall the upgrades will be about 75 per cent fibre-to-the-cabinet, offering up to 40Mbit/s downstream, and 25 per cent fibre-to-the-premises, offering up to 100Mbit/s downstream at first. BT hasn't disclosed which exchanges will get which technology.
