The road to high availability systems

Broadcasting live and direct

Webcast While the vision of IT might be rows of gleaming systems running standardised applications, the truth is that many organisations struggle with their IT environments as wave after wave of new IT projects have had to work alongside older kit and software.

The end result is felt most keenly in terms of service delivery meaning IT staff bear the brunt of such things as complexity and fragmentation within the infrastructure, which impacts such characteristics as availability and performance.

A number of proven design principles exist, such as clustering, replication and so on, which exist to help deliver an effective, reliable IT infrastructure. Meanwhile, infrastructure itself is changing, largely due to the impact of virtualisation but also starting to take into account hosted service delivery.

Such capabilities do offer benefits from an availability and performance perspective, but they can also be a risk if they are not considered in terms of how to deliver a reliable, available infrastructure.

So where to start? Well, you could join us.

On the April 26 at 11am we have a live broadcast that will consider how to think architecturally, taking into account the service delivery and manageability aspects to ensure the availability and performance of specific applications and the infrastructure as a whole.

Tim Phillips will be your effervescent host for the live proceedings and joining him will be our old mucker from Freeform Dynamics, Jon Collins, and Microsoft supremo Andrew Driver. The three of them will be running through what it takes to get service delivery up to scratch in your organization. Between them they’ll cover a range of topics including:

  • The fundamentals of service – revisiting the near-timeless principles of availability, performance, scalability, security, compliance etc, and considering them from a user perspective. This also considers the different kinds of user (mobile, transactional, etc) and their different needs.
  • What’s old and what’s new – the ‘old’ includes such constructs as clustering, replication, DR sites, backup/recovery. ‘New’ includes virtualization, hosting/cloud based services. While the fundamentals may not have changed, the number of valid combinations, and hence the decision making, becomes more complex particularly with respect to HA/DR.
  • Where to start – thinking architecturally, taking into account service requirements and delivering/managing on a more pro-active basis. We look at building high availability/disaster recovery into IT, particularly with respect to using capabilities such as virtualization. We look at success stories and gotchas, as well as spin-off benefits such as using DR capacity for BI.
  • What of the future – decision making based on need will become more important, so here we discuss how to get ready.

Tempted? We thought so. You can register for the event right here. If you can’t make the live broadcast remember – register today and we’ll email you when the recorded version is ready.

Having said that, the live event tends to be a much more interesting affair, if only because you can ask direct questions and get them answered by our panel of experts. It’s almost like free consulting from the comfort of your desk. Almost. ®
