Gene Hunt tops 'TV stars for PM' poll

Or would your prefer The Stig?

Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes anti-hero cop Detective Chief Inspector Gene Hunt - played with suitable gusto by Philip Glenister - has been voted by telly fans as the fictional character they would most like to see become Blighty's Prime Minister.

The self-styled Gene Genie - known for his no-BS manner around the manor - beat the face-changing Time Lord from Doctor Who and Top Gear's silent Stig to the top slot in a poll conducted among Virgin Media subscribers.

We can see it now...

Sir Humphrey Well, Prime Minister, if we could just discuss the debt crisis...

PM ....

Sir H A sensible policy, Prime Minster. Now, turning to the suggestion we invade Iraqistan...

PM ....

Sir H Yes, Prime Minister.

Gene Hunt, on the other hand, would make for a more colourful question time:

Speaker I call on Sir Talbot Buxomley, Honourable Member for Trumpton South.

Sir Talbot Would the Prime Minister agree that the Metropolitan Police's alleged reputation for brutality, insensitivity and intemperance is completely and utterly unfounded?

PM Would the Honourable Member - a member of the limpest kind if I ever saw one - kindly shut his cake 'ole before I give him a bill his passage it will never forget. Right, fire up the Quattro, and the last one of you lot down the pub is a nonce.

Shameless' Frank Gallagher took fourth place, ahead of Rosie Webster (Coronation Street), Sue Brockman (Outnumbered), Tony Hutchinson (Hollyoaks), Eric Pollard (Emmerdale) and Norris Cole (Coronation Street). ®
