HP's webOS tablet 'due in Q3'

HP will release a tablet based on Palm's webOS in the third quarter, according to a report citing an "HP insider."

According to Examiner.com, the device will be known as the HP Hurricane.

On April 28, HP announced it had agreed to purchase Palm, and during a conference call with reporters and analysts, the company said it intended to use Palm's webOS on tablets as well as smartphones.

HP was already developing a tablet based on Windows 7 - the HP Slate - but rumor has it that this project is now buried. The word is that HP considers Atom too power-hungry.

The third quarter seems awfully soon for the release of device based on webOS - especially when you consider that HP would have to switch from Atom to ARM - or port webOS to Atom.

But it's possible that HP is repurposing an existing ARM tablet project for webOS. There have long been rumors that the company was also developing an Android-based tablet. ®
