Sony revamps pricey Vaio P netbook

Adds GPS, SSD

Sony has updated its Vaio P netbook, despite the original's notebook-level pricing and the availability of cheaper netbooks from the same supplier.

The new Vaio P again contains an Intel Atom Z-series processor - the kind developed for handheld tablets.

It has an 8in, 1600 x 768 display driven by Intel's GMA 500 integrated graphics core. There are 2GB of DDR 2 memory on board and a 65GB SSD.

Connectivity? 802.11n and Bluetooth 2.1, plus 3G on some versions.

The new model has on-board GPS and a digital compass. It only weighs 632g, but at 245 x 120 x 19.8mm, it's not exactly smartphone-slim for easy handheld navigation duties.

They also come in new, snazzier colours.

The cheapest of the current Vaio Ps is £900. Sony hasn't said how much the new models will cost, but given Sony's own Vaio W and M netbooks come in at £300, the company will have to cut the cost of the P to compete.

The new Vaio P will be out in June. ®
