A pedigree dog, crowned the world’s ugliest pooch, has died at the grand old age of 17.
Miss Ellie was a wiggly-eyed Chinese Crested Hairless mutt with a drooping tongue and a scruffy mass of sprouting grey hair. She was also a keen charity fundraiser according to Asheville Citizen-Times, which first reported the dog’s sad demise.
Last year Miss Ellie, who was rescued when she was seven years old, won prizes for being both the world’s ugliest and the world’s cutest dog in separate competitions in the US.
She also did a star-turn on the Animal Planet cable show Dogs 101, which was broadcast across the globe.
Her charity work included efforts to raise cash for the local humane society in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
Last year the town’s Mayor, Keith Whaley, declared 12 November as "Miss Ellie Day", after she raised more than $100,000 for the Sevier County Humane Society.
Fans of Miss Ellie can express their condolences via the Comedy Barn Canines Facebook page.
Her owner, Dawn Goehring, and 13 other rescue dogs survive Miss Ellie, who will be cremated. ®
