Vodafone sticks universal mail in shredder

Vodafone.not. Guffaw

Vodafone is shelving its vodafone.net service, trying to get subscribers to sign up to Vodafone 360 instead despite the stark disparity in services.

Vodafone.net (or Vodafone Mail) has been knocking about since 2003 when the world's biggest mobile operator killed off the Vizzavi brand it bought off Vivendi a year earlier. Since then users have enjoyed getting faxes and voicemails, not to mention SMS and MMS, delivered direct to their email accounts.

But Vodafone is now pulling the plug, and suggests users might be happier joining the Web 2.0 crowd - as embodied by Vodafone 360 - instead.

Anyone who suggests that a Facebook-connected music shop isn't directly comparable to a fax-and-voicemail-consolidator clearly hasn't been taking their Web 2.0 pills: according to Vodafone not only is the comparison fair, but the former supersedes the latter.

Old fogies who still like to communicate using voice, or (worse) fax, should get with the groove and use Twitter instead.

But if you're determined to have your voicemails delivered to your email account then you'll have to look to HulloMail or similar, and if you still need to use fax then perhaps you should consider joining the 21st century. ®
