Amazon punts Kindleware for Androids
Available worldwide. Within limits
Amazon has released Kindleware for Android handhelds.
The company's free Kindle application is now available — worldwide — from the Android Marketplace, but if you're outside the US, you may not have access to the Amazon's entire ebook catalog.
Amazon is already offering iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry, Mac, and Windows apps that replicate the software built into its Kindle ereader handheld, and its Android app works in much the same way. Even if you don't own a physical Kindle, you can use the application to download titles from Amazon's online ebook store. But if you do own a Kindle, it will automatically synchronize with the Android app and other Kindle apps via its built-in wireless connections.
This means you can share titles you've purchased across multiple devices, and as you move from device to device, your central Kindle account will keep track of, say, what page you're on in whatever device you last used.
You cannot, however, access Amazon's newspaper and magazine subscriptions from a Kindle app. You must have a physical Kindle.
Though Amazon's Kindle apps are available for use outside the US, the company says that "book availability may vary" if you're not stateside. "Content availability varies by country due to a number of factors. Each customer has a content catalog associated with their region or country, and we display the appropriate catalog for each customer," the company has told us. ®
