Hornby opens part-time visitor centre

Trains, planes and automobiles - Hornby, Airfix and Scalextric

Model train maker Hornby is opening a visitor centre in Margate for fans of tiny transport toys.

But don't be trying to get in mid-week - opening hours are Friday, Saturday and Sunday. And you need to pre-book tickets too. And no unaccompanied kids under the age of 18 either.

The centre promises "a fascinating journey through the history of Britain's best loved toys".

Hornby also owns Scalextric, Airfix and Corgi. The centre opens from this Saturday.

The history of the firm starts with Frank Hornby who started Meccano Limited in 1907. Meccano was a huge success and in 1920 the company moved into making clockwork trains. The first electric train went on sale in 1925, and production moved to safer six volt supplies in 1929.
