Yahoo Japan has inked a deal to use Google's search engine in an apparent snub to Microsoft's Bing.
Mountain View's Asia Pacific ops veep Daniel Alegre said Yahoo Japan would use Google's search results and its tech for pumping out ads to surfers in that region. In addition, Yahoo Japan will also supply its data to Google.
Microsoft's Bing search engine is of course knitted into the fabric of Yahoo! Inc these days after its CEO Carol Bartz sealed a deal with Steve Ballmer in July 2009.
Yahoo!'s switch to using Bing's search algorithms and its ad serving platform will happen in two steps in September and October this year.
But the Japanese wing of the company, whose biggest shareholder is Softbank Corp, has instead opted for Google's search engine.
Yahoo! Inc is only Yahoo Japan's second largest shareholder after Softbank, so perhaps it didn't have a big say on
decisions search engines in that particular market.
Either way, it's a bad day for Microsoft in Japan. ®
