Vodafone fronts €150,000 for mobile start ups

Planned, or realised

Vodafone has launched another round of its Mobile Clicks compo, offering €100,000 to the best mobile startup - even if it hasn't actually started up just yet.

The competition will be judged on economic and financial viability, the quality of the management team and the functionality offered to end users – this is about companies rather than applications, even if the latter drives the former. The winner will get €100,000 to help them on their way, while the runner up will pocket €50,000.

Last year the prizes went three ways, with Layar winning €75,000 while Mobypicture got €50,000 and Woobius scooped the remaining pot. Readers might not have noticed Mobypicture (image sharing) or Woobius (cloud-based project management) changing the world, but Layar's augmented-reality capability is already changing the way we look at things – or at least making us look at them through a phone's lens.

It will be interesting to see if Vodafone can match that pedigree this year. It's certainly one worth watching, unless you work for a mobile startup less than three years old (or have one primed for launch), in which case your time would be better spent entering. ®
