Spurs soothsayer predicts Young Boys thrashing on Twitter

Unofficial tweet caught offside

Spurs has apologised over a misguided update to the club's Twitter account that predicted the North London club would thrash Euro opponents Young Boys on Tuesday night.

The bullish prediction from the club's official Twitter account (@SpursOnSide) that "6-2 Our boys thrash Young Boys! http://bit.ly/db0mCl" was swiftly deleted and replaced with an apology and a promise to investigate the matter.

"The Club wishes to make clear that a Tweet posted shortly before 10am in reference to tonight's game was NOT an official Club tweet," Spurs said, later adding: "This Tweet in no way represented Club views or opinions - the matter is now being fully investigated."

Success over Swiss club Young Boys over a two-leg tie will allow Spurs to progress to the highly lucrative Champions League proper alongside Chelsea, Man United and Arsenal.

Spurs are 8/11 on favourites to win Tuesday's away leg. William Hill is offering a 250-1 return on a 6-2 Tottenham away win.

Either a UK version of Biff Tannen has obtained a future sports almanac and access to a time machine or else bullish sysadmins got bored and published the Mystic Meg-style update. The timing and nature of the update makes it unlikely that it was the work of an external hacker.

"In my opinion they are trying to integrate auto twitter posting into their CMS and have sodded something up," speculates Reg reader and Spurs fan Rob, who flagged up the swiftly withdrawn update.

"It just goes to show you don't even need your twitter account hacked to look like a plank," he added. ®
