Undiplomatic tweet from French diplomats

Channelling Sarko

The French Foreign Ministry's official Twitter account was "hacked" earlier today and a rather rude message posted.

It said: "FUCK YOU ROMANIAN PEOPLE! I HATE YOU ALL AND I WANT TO DESTROY EU!"

The tweet has gone now and been replaced with a message which said the @francediplo account had been hacked, the message had been erased and measures taken to ensure it did not happen again.

We hope a French civil servant didn't accidentally give away the password...

The message might sound like tiny French President Sarkozy's inner monologue - he's done very little to boost his international standing this week. He reacted with barely-disguised fury yesterday to European Commission criticism of his policy of destroying Roma camps in France and deporting residents back to Romania.

Sarko did win support from Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi. Italy has also been destroying camps and has taken little action against mob violence directed at Roma since Berlusconi was re-relected in 2008. He also threatened to fingerprint all Roma children.

France also banned full-face veils this week. The law will come into force after six months' "education and mediation". This is explained by the Foreign Ministry: "This involves explaining to women that if they wear a full face-veil in public they will face arrest and a fine and mediation to ensure that the measure is understood and accepted by the whole Muslim community in France." There remains a good chance that judges will rule the law unconstitutional.

Hat tip to ReadWriteWeb, which also has screengrabs of the offending missive. ®
