Vodafone throws cash at Cricket betting and loyalty card apps

Vodafone has awarded £100,000 to Cardmobili, with Roulette Cricket getting £50,000, as the most innovative mobile startups identified by the operator's Clicks competition.

Roulette Cricket is a British effort, and involves betting toy money on the direction of the next boundary strike in a live game of cricket, while being advertised at. Cardmobili comes from Portugal and keeps track of the users' loyalty cards so they don't have to be carried to be used.

Innovative start ups, both launched and about to launch, were invited to submit their entries in July, and 159 of them did. Both the winners fall into the "already launched" category, and their success in building a workable business model was a factor in the judging. The 159 entrants whittled down by panels of judges and a public vote, down to the final two who share the prize money.

Cardmobili plans to spend the cash promoting its service, while Roulette Cricket reckons £50K will fund it taking the concept into football, golf and sailing - we're assuming that refers to the concept of trivial games related to live sports, rather than the more-specific prediction of boundary strikes. ®
