Redmond rumours over Massive kill

Game over for in-game ads unit?

Updated Microsoft is reportedly set to close its in-game ad wing Massive Inc before the month is out.

However, the company has declined to comment on a Mediaweek story published late last week that cited sources close to Massive who claimed the shutters would come down by the end of October.

The website claimed that Massive’s general manager JJ Richards is looking for another job and reported that the firm’s tech and sales team are being steadily siphoned off to other projects.

The report claims that Microsoft has been seeking a suitor for Massive, which it bought for between $200m and $400m in 2006, including an effort to sell the outfit to rival ad network Double Fusion.

We asked Microsoft to comment on the Mediaweek story, but at time of writing it hadn’t got back to us. ®

Update

A Microsoft spokeswoman gave The Register this statement:

"It is business as usual. We have nothing new to announce to business partners, publishers, or advertisers at this point."

In other words, the company hasn't dismissed the report as mere "speculation".
