Front End / Client Side Web Developer
El Reg is hiring
The position has now been filled and applications are now closed.
Situation Publishing, owner of The Register and Reg Hardware, is looking for a full time developer to primarily work on HTML(5), CSS, JavaScript/jQuery and template engines such as XSLT and Perl’s Template Toolkit.
You’ll work in our Edinburgh office and will be involved in scoping and design aspects (e.g. building wireframes with tools like gomockingbird.com) and ensure the availability and quality of our online presence.
We try hard to be standards compliant and take a staged approach to new technologies: we experiment on the edges of our sites then progressively roll out new tech as it matures. We rely heavily on Git for process and revision control and embrace open source software.
You’ll have:
- Tenacious eye for detail, good design and simple pragmatic solutions
- Encyclopedic understanding of the relevant standards (including, but not limited to HTML4 & 5, CSS2 & 3, JavaScript) and the quirks of popular modern browsers
- Cat-like curiosity for exploring new ideas, experimentation & testing
- Modicum of familiarity with the surrounding web technologies (HTTP, Apache, browser privacy policies, DNS, SEO, etc.)
- Excellent English & the legal right to work in the UK.
We appreciate your skills need to evolve and you need time and space to develop them for your benefit as well as ours. Equally, we expect you to take a hands on, peer-focused approach that complements the day to day work.
We use a lot of Perl, MySQL and Apache. You don’t need any experience with these (but it's a bonus). We expect you to become familiar with them over time and embrace them when they can help you work smarter.
Our Edinburgh tech team is small, focused and has a good degree of autonomy, so you need to be able to produce great work without a carrot or stick and be comfortable communicating with the wider business via email, phone, IM and online tools such as Wikis and Google Docs.
We offer a competitive salary based on your experience; company pension contribution; and 25 days annual holiday.
