Prism provides Bocada's backup vision
Release 2 is faster and better
Backup may be broken, as FalconStor and others argue, but it's still out there, being used every day, and has to be used as best it can. Bocada's release 2 of its Prism backup reporting tool helps large enterprises do just that.
There are around 500 large enterprises using Bocada's reporting tools to manage more than 300,000 backup clients and servers, meaning an average of 600 backup instances per customer. Imagine you run a fleet of 100 vehicles of different types, using petrol, diesel or electricity, and you have to monitor fuel costs, insurance costs, breakdowns, accident rates and cost of ownership. Now your firm buys another and you manage two car fleets of a 100 cars each with different fleet management systems.
Then your firm buys another, and another and so on, until you are running six car fleets distributed across dozens of business units with 600 vehicles in total. That's what Bocada does with backup; it enables its customers to monitor and manage a backup infrastructure with multiple and different backup products spread across a large enterprise.
The multiple car fleet management analogy is apt when you consider multi-tenant occupation of cloud data centres and the need for the service provider to optimise backup processes across the multiplicity of tenants and their various heterogeneous backup products and schedules.
Prism release 2 has performance improvements for the creation of reports from very large data sets, like those from companies with hundreds if not a thousand-plus backup events in any one period.
There are five new treading reports. The first provides an overall view of the amount of data being backed up; the second looks at length of time it takes backup processes to run and how that is changing; the third looks at the use of backup media and its change over time; and the fourth looks at the number, type and distribution of backup errors over time. The fifth and final report provides a view of how overall storage changes over time.
These are all simple enough things when you have one backup product and one data centre, but can become horribly complicated to calculate when you have dozens of backup products and hundreds of backup events happening every week in multiple data centres.
Bocada has also announced a migration package for users of its Bocada Enterprise product to move to Prism. ®
