All Google staff are getting a $1,000 bonus for incidental Christmas expenses and can look forward to a ten per cent pay rise next year.
On top of the ten per cent hike, from 1 January, Googlers can also expect a rise equivalent to their target bonus for the year, plus an additional "merit increase", Business Insider reports.
Google will also pay any tax due on the $1,000 bonus.
An email from Eric Schmidt said the ten per cent hike was global and would go to staff at all levels. He said: "We’ve heard from your feedback on Googlegeist and other surveys that salary is more important to you than any other component of pay (i.e., bonus and equity).
"To address that, we’re moving a portion of your bonus into your base salary, so now it’s income you can count on, every time you get your paycheck... Thank you for all that you do, and for making Google a place where magic happens."
The ad giant would not comment on the email. ®
