Aussie outfit offers Brits rock-bottom price tellies

Kogan's Run

All hail the People's Republic of China! Without the PRC churning out electronic goods for next to nowt, how could operations like Australian business Kogan, newly set up in the UK, pledge to "end 'rip-off Britain' prices"?

Selling direct over the web helps too, as does importing directly from the manufacturer.

The company, which has been selling cheap-as-chips kit Down Under since 2007, opened its UK website this week selling a pair of 6in touchscreen satnavs and four edge LED-backlit tellies of various sizes - 19-26in - some with integrated DVR functionality, though you'll have to add the storage yourself, connecting it to the TVs' USB portage.

Telly prices range from £129 (19in, 720p) to £289 (26in, 1080p). Shipping is free.

It's a rather narrower range than Kogan's Australia store, which offers e-book readers, microwaves and all sorts of stuff, but the prices are keen. Whether the quality matches that of pricer, name-brand alternatives remains to be seen.

If you want to see for yourself, Kogan said it is putting up a stack of tellies on eBay for a penny a pop at 3pm today. Bid away, but watch out for existing Kogan eBay pages that are pricier than its own website. ®
