Vodafone offers free mobile broadband in Europe

All roads lead to roam

Vodafone today said it has "simplified" its European data roaming charges.

The operator will bundle a daily allowance of 25MB roaming data transfers - equivalent to roughly 750MB a month - with each contract costing £40 a month or more.

If your monthly fee is less than £40, you can pay a £10 top-up to gain that small but free volume of data when you're travelling in Europe.

Vodafone said it wants smartphone users in particular to be able use their data-centric gadgets abroad and use them to the full without having to fear the size of the bill when they return.

European law already forces carriers to cap roaming data charges at €50 (£42) a month. That regulation came into force on 1 July this year.

The EU's roaming rules limit the wholesale price of data to €1 per megabyte, although carriers are free to charge their customers more. ®
