Nick Cave smashes speed camera with Jag
Microscopic cog in a catastrophic van plan
Australian singer, actor, writer and Kylie-killer* Nick Cave laid waste to one of Hove's speed cameras when he crashed his car into it.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, when the 53-year-old's Jaguar saloon smashed through a barrier on the seafront and took out the innocent tool of governmental oppression, the Telegraph relates.
Cave and his two sons, who were passengers in the car, were unhurt, and the singer was not arrested. The Sussex Safer Roads Partnership camera was badly damaged.
Our foremost finger-wagging journal the Daily Mail has had great fun with its reporting of the incident, although it appears the headline has undergone a punectomy since initial publication on the website: now limply waving the banner 'And the latest hit from rock star Nick Cave…', it formerly flew the flag of 'Nick Cave and the Bad SPEEDS'. Clearly this was too obscure a reference for the average Mail site visitor, though not for the average cultured Reg reader, who surely needs no explanatory footnote.**
However, the report still opens with the unsurpassably magnificent line: "As an award-winning rock star, Australian musician Nick Cave has been renowned for the passion and darkness of his material but that intensity spilled onto a Sussex seafront last night."
Cave's next project is scripting the remake of awesome cheesy-righteous goth-rock comic book tragedy The Crow. It is likely to be quite good. ®
