Xbox 360 outsells PS3 2:1

Kinect-ic energy

Microsoft has been selling a lot more Kinect bundles than Sony has sold PlayStation 3 and Move combos a US market watcher has claimed. And that suggests that it's selling more than twice as many consoles as its arch-rival is.

According to Michael Pachter, an analyst with Wedbush Securities, by way of Industry Gamers, "about one fifth of PS3 sales included bundles with Sony’s Move controller [and] about half of Xbox 360 sales included bundles with Microsoft’s Kinect peripheral."

So, 20 per cent of PS3s sold in the US come with Move, while 50 per cent of Xboxes shipped there include Kinect.

In short, half of Xbox buyers want Kinect, but only a fifth of PS3 buyers want Move.

Of course, that's just buyers of new consoles, and says nothing about the extent to which folk who already own a PS3 or an Xbox 360 are adopting the new motion control systems. Or, for that matter, how many people buying the bundles are actually using the new controller tech. We can' say how many people who didn't buy a bundle - of either kind - will go on to acquire, or have done so already, the motion control add-on(s).

But here's the thing: "Xbox 360 Kinect console bundles outsold PS3 Move console bundles by more than 5:1," claimed Pachter.

Given the proportion of Kinect and Move bundles sold out of the overall sales volumes of their respective consoles, it's easy to calculate that, overall, Microsoft sold twice as many Xboxes - with or without Kinect - as Sony shipped Move and Move-less PS3s.

That should be far more of a worry for Sony than the relative popularity of Move and Kinect. ®
