Freeview HD audience up 179% in four months

Christmas boost

Nine months after launch, Freeview HD is being watched by some 642,000 homes, the terrestrially broadcast digital TV brand said yesterday.

In October 2010, Freeview put the figures at 230,000, so that's a near tripling of the audience in just four months.

Christmas undoubtedly played a big part in that jump, but so will the debut of a fourth HD channel, BBC One HD.

A fair bit of England still doesn't get Freeview HD, but only a couple of regions started getting the broadcasts after October 2010, so folk there likely account for a very small part of the growth.

Freeview HD-tunable tellies accounted for a quarter of HD TVs with digital tuners sold in December, Freeview said. Freeview HD DVRs outsold receivers by two to one. ®
